Round Robin Fixture Count Calculator

Round Robin Fixture Count Calculator

How many matches a round robin takes in association football: single or double, one group or many, with the matchdays and byes an odd entry needs and the knockout bracket the qualifiers imply.

Fixtures in a round robin, and the bracket after it

Teams → fixtures
Entries in one group or one league. A round robin needs at least two, so the panel refuses nought and one. The default is the Premier League’s published “20 member clubs”.
One for a league, more for a group stage. Article 11(2) of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Regulations divided 32 teams into “eight groups of four teams” — eight here, four above.
A World Cup group plays once: Article 11(4) says “Each team plays each of the other teams in the same group once, according to a league system.” A domestic league normally plays twice.
Leave it at nought where there is no knockout stage and the bracket rows disappear rather than printing zeros. Article 11(6) of the Qatar 2022 Regulations sent the top two from each group to the round of 16.

Formula

Matches in one single round robin = n(n − 1) ÷ 2
Across g groups, with each pair meeting L times = g × n(n − 1) ÷ 2 × L
Matches each team plays = (n − 1) × L
Matchdays = (n − 1) × L for an even n, n × L for an odd n
Knockout bracket = the next power of two at or above the qualifiers; ties = qualifiers − 1
why the division by two is always exact
because n and n − 1 are consecutive integers, so one of them is even and their product always is. n(n − 1) ÷ 2 is a whole number for every n — checked here for every n from 0 to 128 — so a round-robin count never needs a rounding rule
the odd entry, where this goes wrong
an even entry pairs everybody every matchday and finishes in n − 1 of them. An odd entry leaves one team unpaired each matchday, so there is a bye and the schedule needs n. The match total does not change, only the calendar: seventeen teams still play 136 matches, over 17 matchdays with one club idle each week
the bracket, and the function the engine does not have
q qualifiers need the next power of two at or above q, and the difference is byes. This site’s expression language has no log2, so the bracket is 2 to the power of the ceiling of log10(q) ÷ log10(2) — checked against an exact integer doubling loop at every value from 1 to 256, the whole range these inputs reach. It is exact to 2,047 and first disagrees at 2,048
ties, not matches
a knockout among q teams is q − 1 ties however many byes it carries, because each tie eliminates one team. A tie over two legs is two matches, and the two-legged tie and away goals calculator resolves one of those

Worked example

One group of 20 teams playing each other twice, with four advancing to a play-off
20 × 19 = 380 team-matches, and every match is two of them, so a single round robin is 190 matches
Played twice, that is 380 matches, with each club playing 38 over 38 matchdays and no byes because 20 is even
Four clubs advancing is already a power of two, so the bracket is 4 with no byes and 3 ties — which is five matches, not three, if the semi-finals are two-legged
Change the teams to 21 and the matchdays become 42 with one bye per matchday while the total rises to 420: the calendar changes shape, not just length
Change the advancing teams to 6 and the bracket becomes 8 with 2 byes, and the ties stay at qualifiers minus one, which is 5
Set the teams to 1, or the groups to 0, and the panel shows nothing

Four real structures, each reproduced from its own published figures

Competition and documentComputed hereWhat the document says
UEFA Champions League league phase, Regulations 2026/27 Art. 17.01144 matches, 18 a matchday, 8 matchdaysuefa.com publishes “144 (18 matches per matchday; 8 matchdays in total)”. All three reproduced
The same league phase as a FULL round robin630 matches, 35 a clubNot what UEFA plays: 17.01 has “each club plays eight opponents in single-leg ties”, so the league phase is INCOMPLETE
FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 group stage, Art. 11(2) and 11(4)48 matches, 3 a team, 6 a group“eight groups of four teams”, each playing the others “once, according to a league system”
Qatar 2022 to the final, two advancing a group16 qualifiers, a 16 bracket, no byes, 15 ties; 48 + 15 + a third-place play-off = 64Art. 11(6) sends the top two through. The 64 is computed: the regulations print no total
A 20-club double round robin380 matches, 38 a club, 38 matchdayspremierleague.com gives “the 20 member clubs” and no match count, so both figures are computed
The first row is the only published worked example found for this subject: UEFA prints the total, the matches per matchday and the number of matchdays, and the formula reproduces all three. The second row is there because the league phase is not a round robin at all. Where a document states no figure, the row says so.

Every figure is this calculator’s own output. Read the pairs — 16 against 17, 20 against 21. Adding one team to an even group adds a matchday beyond the one the extra opponent requires, because somebody now sits out every week, and the matches-a-matchday column does not rise at all. Multiply the matchday column by it and the match total comes back in every row.

Every figure is this calculator’s own output. The fourth column is the one that surprises: the ties are the qualifiers minus one in every row, exact bracket or not, because each tie eliminates one team and all but one has to go. Byes change who plays when, never how many ties. The 24-team row is the Champions League’s own shape.

The exact count, and the bye nobody plans for

The fixtures counted here are association football fixtures — soccer — and the competition structures quoted are FIFA’s and UEFA’s. The arithmetic of a round robin is the same in any sport, so the formulas transfer; the competition formats do not, because every governing body sets its own. A round robin is the simplest competition format there is — everybody plays everybody — and its match count is exact rather than approximate. Each of n teams plays the other n − 1, which is n(n − 1) team-matches, and every match is two team-matches, so the fixture list is n(n − 1) ÷ 2. Playing each pair twice doubles it exactly. Twenty clubs meeting twice is 380 matches and 38 each, and the Premier League states that its shareholders are “the 20 member clubs” while printing neither of those numbers, so both of them here are arithmetic rather than quotation.

Where implementations break is the odd entry. With an even number of teams every matchday pairs everybody and the round robin fits into n − 1 matchdays. With an odd number one team is unpaired every matchday — it has a bye — and the schedule needs n matchdays rather than n − 1. The number of matches does not change, because it never depended on the calendar; only the calendar does. Seventeen teams still play 136 matches, but over seventeen weeks with one club idle each week rather than over sixteen.

The knockout stage after a group stage is a different kind of counting. A bracket has to be a power of two, so q qualifiers need the next power of two at or above q and the difference is byes: twelve teams need a sixteen bracket and four byes. What does not change is the number of ties, always q − 1, because each tie eliminates one team and all but one must go. The Champions League is the clearest case: Article 19.01 of the 2026/27 regulations has “24 clubs enter the knockout phase”, a 32 bracket, and eight byes that are precisely the eight clubs Article 17.04 sends straight to the round of 16.

Two of the structures in the first table above are both called leagues and only one is a round robin. The Champions League league phase is not — Article 17.01 has “each club plays eight opponents in single-leg ties”, so 36 clubs produce 144 matches rather than the 630 a complete round robin among them would need. For what a round robin produces once it is played, the league table points calculator takes the points per result as inputs rather than assuming three for a win. Every figure on this page is printed with the body that publishes it and the season or edition it belongs to, because a football number is usually a regulation rather than a fact, and regulations are revised. Check the playing conditions or competition regulations for the competition in front of you before relying on a default.

Frequently asked questions

How many matches are in a round robin?

n(n − 1) ÷ 2 for a single round robin among n teams, and n(n − 1) if every pair meets twice. Each team plays n − 1 matches. Twenty teams meeting twice is 380 matches and 38 each; four teams meeting once is six matches and three each.

How many rounds does a round robin need?

n − 1 matchdays with an even number of teams and n with an odd number, because an odd entry leaves one team unpaired each matchday. The number of matches is the same either way — only the calendar is longer.

Why does an odd number of teams need a bye?

Because matches use teams two at a time, so an odd number cannot all be paired and exactly one has to sit out — one bye per matchday, never two. Half-integer arithmetic never appears: n(n − 1) is always even.

How many matches are in a group stage with several groups?

Multiply one group’s round robin by the number of groups. Article 11(2) of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Regulations divided 32 teams into “eight groups of four teams” playing each other once, which is six matches a group and 48 in all. Adding the 15 knockout ties and the third-place play-off gives 64 — a figure the regulations do not print, so it is computed.

How big does a knockout bracket need to be?

The next power of two at or above the number of qualifiers, with the difference taken as byes: twelve qualifiers need a sixteen bracket and four byes. The number of ties is the qualifiers minus one whatever the byes are, and a tie over two legs is two matches.
