Adding and removing VAT

Add: VAT = net × r ÷ 100. Remove: VAT = gross × r ÷ (100 + r); net = gross − VAT
r
the VAT rate in %
r ÷ (100 + r)
the VAT fraction: the share of an inclusive price that is VAT — 1/21 at 5%, 3/23 at 15%, 1/6 at 20%

Worked example

$1,000 before VAT, UAE standard rate 5%
VAT = 1,000 × 5 ÷ 100 = $50.00
Price including VAT = $1,050.00
Going back: VAT in 1,050 = 1,050 × 5 ÷ 105 = $50.00

Add or remove VAT correctly

Adding VAT is a percentage of the net price. Removing it from a price that already includes VAT is not: the VAT inside an inclusive price is a fraction r ÷ (100 + r) of it, which HMRC in the UK calls the VAT fraction. At 15%, the VAT inside $1,150 is $150 and the net price $1,000; taking 15% of $1,150 would give $172.50, which is wrong. At the UK’s 20%, the fraction is one-sixth: $120 including VAT holds $20 of it.

The presets are standard rates, each with the date it took effect where that is a single clear date: the UAE introduced VAT at 5% on 1 January 2018; Saudi Arabia raised its rate from 5% to 15% on 1 July 2020; Bahrain doubled its rate to 10% on 1 January 2022; Oman introduced 5% VAT on 16 April 2021; the UK standard rate has been 20% since 4 January 2011; and the Philippines’ 12% has applied since 1 February 2006. Bangladesh’s standard rate is 15%, with many reduced rates. Pakistan’s federal sales tax on goods, a VAT-style tax, is 18% at the standard rate; sales tax on services is set by the provinces. All were checked on 21 September 2026. Qatar and Kuwait do not levy VAT, and Malaysia uses a sales and service tax (SST) rather than VAT; for India, use the GST calculator.

Standard is not universal. Every one of these countries zero-rates or exempts some goods and services — often basic food, health care, education or exports — and the UK and others have reduced rates. Use “Other rate” for those. Rates change, so for anything that matters check the tax authority’s own page (the Federal Tax Authority in the UAE, ZATCA in Saudi Arabia, the National Bureau for Revenue in Bahrain, the Oman Tax Authority, HMRC in the UK). For a business, VAT collected belongs to the government and VAT paid on purchases can usually be reclaimed, so work out margins on net prices with the profit margin calculator. This page is arithmetic, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). $1,000 plus 5% VAT is $1,050.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the inclusive price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). $1,150 including 15% VAT is 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = $1,000 net, with $150 of VAT.

What is the VAT rate in the UAE and Saudi Arabia?

The standard rate is 5% in the UAE (since 1 January 2018) and 15% in Saudi Arabia (since 1 July 2020), as checked on 21 September 2026. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt.

Why is the VAT in a 20% inclusive price not 20% of it?

Because the 20% was charged on the smaller net price. The VAT is 20/120, one-sixth, of the inclusive price: $20 in $120.
