How silver is priced
Silver is quoted as a price for 999 fine silver, per gram or, more often in India, per kilogram. A piece is worth that rate × its weight × its purity. Purity is written as fineness, parts of silver per thousand: 925 sterling silver is 92.5% silver, usually alloyed with copper for strength. This page values a piece by the silver it contains relative to 999, so the 999 rate × 925 ÷ 999 for sterling. Some sellers simply multiply by 0.925; the difference is 0.1%.
Hallmarks in India. Since 1 September 2025 the Bureau of Indian Standards has offered HUID-based hallmarking of silver jewellery and articles, on a voluntary basis, under IS 2112:2025. It recognises seven grades: 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990 and 999. The earlier standard, IS 2112:2014, had six, and included 900, which the 2025 revision dropped; older pieces may still be stamped 900. As of mid-2026 BIS was studying whether to make silver hallmarking mandatory, as it is for gold.
Weights and tax. One tola is 11.6638 grams and one troy ounce 31.1035 grams, the same factors as the gold price calculator; the gold unit converter converts others. GST on silver and silver articles in India is 3%, as for gold; enter a making charge for jewellery or utensils, and use the GST calculator for GST on other goods. In the UAE a consumer pays 5% VAT on silver jewellery, while investment silver of 99% purity or more is zero-rated. Silver is also counted towards zakat; see the zakat calculator.

Multiply the 999 rate per gram by 925 ÷ 999 and by the weight. At $150 a gram for 999, 925 silver is $138.89 a gram, and 100 grams is $13,888.89 before tax.
What are the BIS hallmark grades for silver?
IS 2112:2025 has seven: 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990 and 999. Hallmarking of silver has been voluntary since 1 September 2025. The older 900 grade was dropped in the 2025 revision.
What is the GST on silver in India?
3%, on silver and on silver jewellery and articles, the same as gold. A separate job-work rate applies when you supply the silver and pay only for the work.
