How gold is priced by weight and purity
Gold is quoted as a price for one gram of 24 karat gold, and everything else follows from two numbers on the piece in front of you: how much it weighs and how pure it is. Purity is written as fineness, the parts of pure gold per thousand. Karats are twenty-fourths, so 22K is 22 ÷ 24 = 0.9167, stamped 916; 18K is 750; 14K is 585. The common retail convention, used here, prices lower karats at the 24K rate × fineness ÷ 1000, so 22K costs 91.6% of the 24K rate.
Hallmarks. In India the Bureau of Indian Standards hallmarks gold jewellery under IS 1417 in the grades 14K (585), 18K (750), 20K (833), 22K (916), 23K (958) and 24K (995), and added 9K (375) in July 2025. Investment bars and coins are usually 999 or 995. 21K (875) is the everyday jewellery standard in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the rest of the Gulf; it is simply 21 ÷ 24 and is not a BIS grade.
Weights. One tola is 180 grains, 11.6638 grams, and is still how gold is bought in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and the Gulf, where the popular ten-tola bar weighs 116.64 g. A pavan, or sovereign, is 8 grams in the jewellery trade of Kerala and Tamil Nadu (the British sovereign coin itself weighs 7.99 g). Bullion is priced internationally per troy ounce, 31.1035 grams. How do I calculate the price of 22 carat gold from the 24 carat rate?
Multiply the 24K rate by 0.916. At $15,000 a gram for 24K, 22K is $13,740 a gram, and 10 grams is $1,37,400.
How many grams are in a tola?
11.6638 grams. The tola is defined as 180 grains, which is also three-eighths of a troy ounce. A ten-tola bar weighs 116.64 grams.
How many grams is one pavan or sovereign?
8 grams in the jewellery trade. The British sovereign coin weighs slightly less, 7.99 grams, of which 7.32 grams is pure gold.
What does 916 mean on gold?
916 parts of pure gold per 1000, which is 22 karat. 750 is 18K, 585 is 14K and 875 is 21K.
