Gratuity under Article 54

Gratuity = B ÷ 30 × D × S, if S ≥ 1
B
the last basic monthly wage, without allowances
D
days of wage per year: at least 21 (three weeks), more if the contract says so
S
years of service, part years in proportion; nothing is due under one year

Worked example

Basic wage QAR 8,000 a month (an example), 6 years and 3 months, the legal minimum of 21 days a year
Service: 6 + 3 ÷ 12 = 6.25 years
Days earned: 21 × 6.25 = 131.25 days
One day's basic wage: 8,000 ÷ 30 = 266.67
Gratuity = 131.25 × 266.67 = QAR 35,000
If the contract gave 30 days a year: QAR 50,000

Basic wage of 8,000 a month (an example)

Years of serviceDays at 21 a yearGratuity at 21 daysAt 30 days (if contracted)
121$5,600$8,000
363$16,800$24,000
5105$28,000$40,000
10210$56,000$80,000
15315$84,000$1,20,000
20420$1,12,000$1,60,000
The law sets no cap and no step-up after five years: the rate stays three weeks a year unless the contract gives more.

How Qatar’s end-of-service gratuity works

Article 54 of Qatar’s Labour Law No. 14 of 2004 gives a worker who has completed at least one year of service an end-of-service gratuity. The amount is whatever the employment contract says, but not less than three weeks’ wage for each year of service, with part years counted in proportion. It is worked out on the last basic wage, so housing, transport and other allowances are left out. The employer may deduct amounts the worker owes it.

On the example, 6 years and 3 months at a basic wage of QAR 8,000 earns 131.25 days’ basic wage: QAR 35,000. Many Qatar contracts give exactly the legal 21 days; some give 30 days a year, which on the same figures would be QAR 50,000. Unlike the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Kuwait, Qatar’s minimum does not rise after five years and has no cap.

Resignation and dismissal. Article 54 does not reduce the gratuity when you resign: a worker with a year or more is owed it however the contract ends. The exception is dismissal without notice under Article 61 for the serious misconduct it lists, which ends the right to the gratuity. A dispute over that goes to the labour dispute settlement committees.

Who this covers. Workers under the Labour Law in Qatar’s private sector. Qatari nationals are covered by the social insurance (pension) law instead, and domestic workers by their own law. The law does not fix how a monthly wage is turned into a day’s wage; this page uses ÷ 30, the usual practice, and some employers use a 365-day year, which changes the result slightly. We found no amendment to Article 54 in force as of September 2026.

Compare the UAE gratuity calculator and the Saudi end-of-service calculator. The page shows amounts in the currency you choose; for Qatar choose QAR. This is arithmetic on the figures you enter, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

How is end-of-service gratuity calculated in Qatar?

At least three weeks’ (21 days’) basic wage for each year of service, part years in proportion, once you have worked a year. 6 years 3 months at a basic wage of QAR 8,000 gives QAR 35,000.

Is gratuity in Qatar on basic or gross salary?

On the last basic wage. Allowances such as housing and transport are not included unless your contract says otherwise.

Do I lose gratuity if I resign in Qatar?

No. Article 54 does not reduce the gratuity for resignation. You need at least one year of service, and you lose it only if dismissed without notice under Article 61.

Can my contract give more than three weeks a year?

Yes. Three weeks a year is the legal minimum; the contract may promise more, and then the contract figure applies. Enter it in the days-per-year field.
