Baseball Batting Average, OBP and SLG Calculator Baseball's batting average is hits divided by at-bats, so it cannot leave the range .000 to 1.000 — it is not cricket's batting average, which is runs per dismissal and has no upper bound. On-base percentage is also here, with the denominator that is not at-bats. Earned Run Average (ERA) Calculator Earned runs times nine, divided by innings pitched — worked from the innings and outs, not from the pitching line read as a decimal. A line reading 5.2 is five innings and two outs, and dividing by 5.2 makes the ERA about 9% too high at that length. Fielding Percentage and Range Factor Calculator Putouts plus assists over total chances, under Rule 9.21(d) — plus range factor per nine innings, because a fielder who never reaches a ball never gets charged with an error for it. A fielding percentage measures the plays attempted, not the plays available. Magic Number and Games Behind Calculator How far behind the leader a team really is, and how many more combined wins and rival losses it takes to clinch. Both figures take the number of games in the season as an input rather than assuming 162, and the games-behind figure can go negative. Pythagorean Expectation Calculator Expected wins from runs scored and runs allowed — at Bill James's original exponent of 2, at the 1.83 that fits baseball better, and at the Pythagenpat exponent fitted to the run environment itself. The exponent is an empirical fit, not a law, and the three disagree. WAR in Baseball, Explained What wins above replacement is trying to do, what replacement level means, and why Baseball-Reference and FanGraphs give different numbers for the same player in the same season. This page computes no WAR, because any figure it produced would be neither of theirs. WHIP and Pitching Rates Calculator Walks plus hits per inning pitched, with strikeouts per nine, walks per nine and strikeouts per walk — worked from the innings and outs, because a baseball pitching line of 200.1 is 200 innings and one out. WHIP counts no hit batsman, which surprises people. wOBA Calculator (Weighted On-Base Average) Weighted on-base average: one denominator, and a separate published run value for each way of reaching base. The weights are recomputed every season by FanGraphs, so this page asks which season's weights you want rather than pretending they are constants.
