Iron (Fe) Unit Converter

Iron (Fe) is an essential trace element vital for numerous physiological processes, most importantly as a component of Hemoglobin (oxygen transport) and myoglobin (muscle oxygen storage). Serum iron measures the iron bound to the protein Transferrin, which transports it through the blood.[Image of iron metabolism cycle]

Serum Iron testing is generally performed as part of an Iron Panel (along with Transferrin, TIBC, and Ferritin) to diagnose iron deficiency anemia and iron overload conditions like Hemochromatosis. Iron levels fluctuate throughout the day, so testing is best done in the morning after fasting. This converter facilitates accurate switching between the SI unit (µmol/L) and the conventional mass unit (µg/dL).

SI Units

Recommended

Micromoles per liter (Standard International).

Conventional Units

Clinical Context

Reference Range (Adults): Typically 60–170 µg/dL (10.7–30.4 µmol/L).

In Iron Deficiency Anemia, serum iron is low, while TIBC is usually high. In Anemia of Chronic Disease, both serum iron and TIBC may be low. The molar conversion factor relies on the atomic weight of Fe 55.845 g/mol: 1 µmol/L ≈ 5.5845 µg/dL.

How to Use This Calculator

Follow these steps to get accurate clinical conversions instantly.

1

Enter Values

Input your laboratory results into the corresponding unit field (e.g., µg/dL). You can use either dot or comma decimals.

2

Automatic Conversion

The calculator works in real-time. As you type in one field, all other units (like µmol/L) are instantly updated.

3

Verify Units

Check the SI Units section. µmol/L is the standard for trace elements.

4

Reset

Use the Clear button to reset all fields before starting a new calculation.

? Frequently Asked Questions & Tips
Is µg/dL the same as ng/mL?

No. µg/dL is 100 times larger than ng/mL. 1 µg/dL = 10 µg/L = 10 ng/mL.

Why do iron levels fluctuate?

Serum iron is influenced by recent diet and is highest in the morning, gradually decreasing throughout the day.
