Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) Unit Converter

Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell essential for fighting bacterial infections. The **Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC)** measures the total number of neutrophils (including both segmented neutrophils and immature “bands”) in the blood.

Clinically, ANC is the gold standard for assessing a patient’s risk of infection, particularly during chemotherapy or in autoimmune disorders. A low ANC is known as **Neutropenia**. This converter facilitates switching between the International SI unit (× 109/L) and conventional absolute counts (cells/μL or cells/mm3).

SI Units / Standard

Recommended

SI Billions per liter (Numerically equivalent to thousands per microliter).

Absolute Count Equivalents

Clinical Context

Reference Range (Adult): Typically 1.5 – 8.0 × 109/L (1,500 – 8,000 cells/μL).

Neutropenia Severity Grading:
Mild: 1.0 – 1.5 × 109/L
Moderate: 0.5 – 1.0 × 109/L
Severe (Agranulocytosis): < 0.5 × 109/L (High risk of serious infection)

Conversion Logic:
1 × 109/L (SI) = 1 × 103/μL = 1,000 cells/μL.

How to Use This Converter

Follow these steps to normalize ANC values across lab reports.

1

Enter Values

Input your laboratory results into the corresponding unit field (e.g., × 109/L). Use dot or comma for decimals.

2

Automatic Conversion

The calculator converts between SI shorthand (e.g., 1.5) and absolute cell counts (e.g., 1500).

3

Check Severity

Use the cells/μL output to compare against standard neutropenia guidelines (usually defined as <1500 or <500).

4

Reset

Use the Clear button to reset all fields.

? Frequently Asked Questions
Is × 109/L the same as × 103/μL?

Yes. A result of “1.5” means 1.5 billion cells per liter, which equals 1,500 cells per microliter.

Is this different from the ANC Calculator?

Yes. This tool converts units (e.g. 1.5 -> 1500). If you need to calculate ANC from WBC and % Neutrophils, use an ANC Calculator.
