Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) Unit Converter

Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) is a glycoprotein hormone structurally related to inhibin and activin. In women, it is produced by the granulosa cells of growing ovarian follicles (specifically pre-antral and small antral follicles). Because AMH levels remain relatively constant throughout the menstrual cycle—unlike FSH or Estradiol—it has become the gold standard biomarker for assessing ovarian reserve.

Clinically, AMH testing is vital for predicting fertility potential, planning IVF stimulation protocols (to avoid Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome), and diagnosing Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), where levels are typically elevated. In men, AMH is produced by Sertoli cells and is useful for evaluating testicular function, particularly in prepubertal boys with cryptorchidism. Accurate conversion between the US standard (ng/mL) and the international standard (pmol/L) is essential for interpreting fertility guidelines worldwide.

Clinical Context

AMH levels decline naturally with age, becoming undetectable after menopause. A “normal” level depends entirely on the patient’s age. For a 30-year-old woman, values often range from 1.5 – 4.0 ng/mL.

Levels < 1.0 ng/mL suggest diminished ovarian reserve, while levels > 4.0 ng/mL are often seen in PCOS. The conversion factor is: 1 ng/mL = 7.14 pmol/L (and conversely, 1 pmol/L = 0.14 ng/mL).
