Carbamazepine Unit Converter

Carbamazepine is an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug used primarily in the treatment of epilepsy (partial seizures and generalized tonic-clonic seizures) and neuropathic pain (such as trigeminal neuralgia). It functions by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby stabilizing hyperexcited neural membranes.

Due to its narrow therapeutic index and non-linear pharmacokinetics (including auto-induction of its own metabolism), Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) is essential. Levels below the therapeutic range may lead to breakthrough seizures, while levels above can cause toxicity symptoms like nystagmus, ataxia, and drowsiness. This converter facilitates accurate switching between the standard mass unit (µg/mL or mg/L) and the molar unit (µmol/L).

Clinical Context

Therapeutic Range: Generally 4 – 12 µg/mL (17 – 51 µmol/L). Levels > 12 µg/mL are considered toxic, though individual tolerance varies.

Carbamazepine induces hepatic enzymes (CYP3A4), which accelerates its own metabolism over the first few weeks of therapy (“auto-induction”). This often necessitates dose adjustments. Additionally, measuring the active metabolite, carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide, may be useful in cases of unexplained toxicity. The conversion factor relies on MW 236.27 g/mol: 1 µg/mL ≈ 4.23 µmol/L.

How to Use This Calculator

Follow these steps to get accurate clinical conversions instantly.

1

Enter Values

Input your laboratory results into the corresponding unit field (e.g., µg/mL). You can use either dot or comma decimals.

2

Automatic Conversion

The calculator works in real-time. As you type in one field, all other units (like µmol/L) are instantly updated.

3

Verify Units

Check the SI Units section. µmol/L is the standard unit for TDM in many countries.

4

Reset

Use the Clear button to reset all fields before starting a new calculation.

? Frequently Asked Questions & Tips
Is µg/mL the same as mg/L?

Yes. 1 µg/mL is exactly equal to 1 mg/L.

When should levels be drawn?

Trough levels (just before the next dose) are standard for monitoring steady-state concentration.
