Asparagine (Asn) Unit Converter

Asparagine (Asn) is a non-essential alpha-amino acid that plays a critical role in the biosynthesis of glycoproteins and other proteins. It is synthesized in the body from aspartate and glutamine by the enzyme asparagine synthetase. Clinically, measuring asparagine levels is vital in the management of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Leukemic cells, unlike normal cells, often lack asparagine synthetase and depend on circulating asparagine for survival. Treatment with the enzyme L-Asparaginase depletes serum asparagine, starving the cancer cells. Monitoring serum levels helps ensure therapeutic depletion (< 2 µmol/L) is achieved. Additionally, low levels in cerebrospinal fluid may indicate Asparagine Synthetase Deficiency, a rare neurodegenerative disorder.

Reference Ranges: In healthy adults, plasma asparagine levels typically range from 30 – 80 µmol/L (0.4 – 1.1 mg/dL). Levels in children are generally lower.

During Asparaginase therapy, the therapeutic goal is often to maintain plasma asparagine below the limit of detection or < 3 µmol/L to ensure leukemic cell starvation. Conversely, in Asparagine Synthetase Deficiency, plasma levels may be normal or low-normal, but CSF levels are diagnostically low. The conversion factor is based on MW 132.12 g/mol: 1 mg/dL ≈ 75.7 µmol/L.
