Ceruloplasmin Unit Converter

Ceruloplasmin is a copper-carrying alpha-2 globulin synthesized in the liver. It transports 95% of the copper in blood plasma. Beyond transport, it functions as a ferroxidase enzyme, converting ferrous iron ($Fe^{2+}$) to ferric iron ($Fe^{3+}$), which allows iron to bind to transferrin for transport.

Clinically, ceruloplasmin is the primary screening test for Wilson’s Disease, a rare genetic disorder of copper metabolism where ceruloplasmin levels are typically low ($< 20 \text{ mg/dL}$). Conversely, as a positive acute-phase reactant, levels rise during inflammation, infection, pregnancy, and estrogen therapy. This converter facilitates accurate switching between the standard international unit (g/L) and the conventional mass unit (mg/dL).

Grams per liter (Standard SI) or Micromoles per liter.

Clinical Context

Reference Ranges: In healthy adults, serum ceruloplasmin is typically 20 – 35 mg/dL (0.2 – 0.35 g/L).

Low Ceruloplasmin: Levels < 20 mg/dL warrant further investigation for Wilson's disease (often confirmed with 24-hour urine copper and slit-lamp exam for Kayser-Fleischer rings). It can also be low in Menkes disease (copper transport defect) and severe malnutrition. The molar conversion uses MW ~132 kDa: 1 g/L ≈ 7.58 µmol/L.

How to Use This Calculator

Follow these steps to get accurate clinical conversions instantly.

1

Enter Values

Input your laboratory results into the corresponding unit field (e.g., mg/dL). You can use either dot or comma decimals.

2

Automatic Conversion

The calculator works in real-time. As you type in one field, all other units (like g/L) are instantly updated.

3

Verify Units

Check the SI Units section. g/L is standard in Europe/Canada, mg/dL in the US.

4

Reset

Use the Clear button to reset all fields before starting a new calculation.

? Frequently Asked Questions & Tips
Is g/L the same as mg/mL?

Yes. 1 g/L is exactly equal to 1 mg/mL.

Does inflammation affect the result?

Yes. Ceruloplasmin is an acute-phase reactant. It may be falsely normal or elevated in Wilson’s disease if inflammation is present.
