Aldolase Unit Converter
Aldolase (specifically Aldolase A in muscle) is a glycolytic enzyme that catalyzes the reversible conversion of fructose-1,6-bisphosphate into glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate. It is found in high concentrations in skeletal muscle, the liver, and the brain.
Clinically, serum aldolase is a marker for muscle damage and hepatic injury. It is particularly useful in diagnosing and monitoring muscular dystrophy (such as Duchenne’s), polymyositis, and dermatomyositis. While Creatine Kinase (CK) is often the preferred muscle enzyme due to higher specificity, aldolase remains valuable when CK is normal or to differentiate between neurogenic (normal aldolase) and myopathic (elevated aldolase) muscle wasting. Because it is an enzyme, results are reported in units of activity (U/L or µkat/L).
SI Units
RecommendedMicrokatals and Nanokatals per liter.

Clinical Context
Aldolase levels are highest in progressive Duchenne muscular dystrophy (often 10–50 times normal) before muscle mass is significantly lost. It is also elevated in myocardial infarction (rising 6-8 hours after chest pain), though cardiac troponins are superior for diagnosis.
Reference ranges vary by age: newborns have levels up to 4 times higher than adults due to fetal isoenzymes. Adult reference ranges are typically 1.0 – 7.5 U/L. The conversion factor follows standard enzyme kinetics: 1 U/L ≈ 16.67 nkat/L ≈ 0.017 µkat/L.

Frequently Asked Questions & Tips
Aldolase is an enzyme. We measure its activity, not its mass. Therefore, units like U/L or katals are used.
Yes, U/L (Units per Liter) and IU/L (International Units per Liter) are interchangeable.
