Creatine Kinase (CK) Unit Converter

Creatine Kinase (CK), also known as Creatine Phosphokinase (CPK), is an enzyme found predominantly in tissues that consume high amounts of ATP, namely skeletal muscle, myocardium (heart muscle), and the brain. CK catalyzes the reversible transfer of a phosphate group from phosphocreatine to ADP, generating ATP for immediate energy use.

Clinically, total CK is a primary marker of muscle cell injury. Significant elevations are seen in rhabdomyolysis, trauma, vigorous exercise, or seizures. While CK was historically used to diagnose myocardial infarction, it has been largely superseded by the highly specific Troponin assays. The specific isoenzyme, CK-MB, remains useful for assessing cardiac injury in certain contexts. Results are reported in units of activity (U/L or $\mu\text{kat/L}$).

SI Units

Recommended

Microkatals and Nanokatals per liter.

Conventional Units

Clinical Context

Reference Range: CK reference ranges are highly dependent on muscle mass and vary by laboratory, sex, and race, but are typically 30 – 200 U/L for adults.

Levels in the thousands are common in rhabdomyolysis, which requires aggressive hydration to prevent acute kidney injury. The presence of CK-MB (the cardiac isoenzyme) must be verified through the CK-MB mass assay to confirm cardiac injury. The conversion factor is constant: 1 U/L $\approx$ 0.0167 µkat/L.

How to Use This Calculator

Follow these steps to get accurate clinical conversions instantly.

1

Enter Values

Input your laboratory results into the corresponding unit field (e.g., U/L). You can use either dot or comma decimals.

2

Automatic Conversion

The calculator works in real-time. As you type in one field, all other units (like µkat/L or kU/L) are instantly updated.

3

Verify Units

Check the SI Units section. µkat/L is the standard ISO unit for enzyme activity.

4

Reset

Use the Clear button to reset all fields before starting a new calculation.

? Frequently Asked Questions & Tips
Why no mass units (mg/dL)?

CK is an enzyme. Clinical labs measure its catalytic activity (rate of reaction), not its mass.

Is U/L the same as IU/L?

Yes, U/L and IU/L (International Units per Liter) are interchangeable.
