Estrone (E1) Unit Converter

Estrone (E1) is the weakest of the three major naturally occurring estrogens (E1, E2, E3). It is the dominant circulating estrogen after menopause. Estrone is synthesized primarily in fat cells from adrenal androgens (like androstenedione) through the action of the enzyme aromatase.

Clinically, measuring Estrone is important for evaluating menopausal hormone status, investigating postmenopausal bleeding, and monitoring estrogen-dependent cancers. High levels may indicate excessive peripheral aromatization (common in obesity) or a tumor. Since its levels are typically low, measurements are often reported in picograms per milliliter (pg/mL) or picomoles per liter (pmol/L). This converter ensures accurate switching between these standards.

SI Units

Recommended

Picomoles per liter (Standard International).

Conventional Units

Clinical Context

Reference Range (Post-Menopausal): Estrone becomes the predominant estrogen after menopause, but levels are low, typically < 20 pg/mL (< 74 pmol/L).

Elevations are common in obese postmenopausal women due to increased aromatase activity in fat tissue, which can elevate the risk of endometrial cancer. The conversion factor relies on the molecular weight of 270.36 g/mol: 1 pg/mL ≈ 3.70 pmol/L.

How to Use This Calculator

Follow these steps to get accurate clinical conversions instantly.

1

Enter Values

Input your laboratory results into the corresponding unit field (e.g., pg/mL). You can use either dot or comma decimals.

2

Automatic Conversion

The calculator works in real-time. As you type in one field, all other units (like pmol/L) are instantly updated.

3

Verify Units

Check the SI Units section. pmol/L is the international standard for reproductive hormones.

4

Reset

Use the Clear button to reset all fields before starting a new calculation.

? Frequently Asked Questions & Tips
Is pg/mL the same as ng/L?

Yes. 1 pg/mL is exactly equal to 1 ng/L.

Why convert to pmol/L?

SI units (pmol/L) are preferred for standardization in endocrine reports outside the US.
