Fuel Economy Converter

Fuel Economy is a critical metric for automotive efficiency, environmental impact, and operating costs. Globally, two distinct methods are used to measure it: Fuel Efficiency (how far you can go on a set amount of fuel) and Fuel Consumption (how much fuel is needed to cover a set distance).

This professional converter seamlessly translates between the American/British standard of Miles per Gallon (MPG), the metric km/L, and the European consumption standard of Liters per 100km. It automatically handles the inverse mathematical relationship between these systems.

Efficiency (Distance)

Higher is Better

Consumption (Volume)

Lower is Better

Gallon Confusion

US Gallon: 3.785 Liters
UK (Imperial) Gallon: 4.546 Liters

Because the UK gallon is larger, UK MPG numbers are always higher than US MPG for the same car.

The Reciprocal Challenge

Converting fuel economy is unique because different regions measure opposite things.

  • US, UK, Japan (MPG, km/L): Measure Efficiency. How far can I go? Here, a higher number is better.
  • Europe, Canada, China (L/100km): Measure Consumption. How much fuel do I burn? Here, a lower number is better.

This means the relationship is reciprocal (inverse). As L/100km goes down, MPG goes up.

How to Use This Converter

Instantly translate between MPG and Metric consumption.

1

Input Data

Type the value into the known field (e.g., enter “30” in MPG US).

2

Automatic Inversion

The tool calculates the equivalent. For “30 MPG”, it will calculate approx “7.8 L/100km”.
